Bruxism: what it is and how to know if you have it

Bruxism is an increasingly common condition that consists of involuntarily clenching or grinding your teeth, especially during sleep. Although many people are not aware that they suffer from it, the effects can be serious: tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches, neck tension, and, in advanced cases, even dental fractures or problems in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

The most common symptoms of bruxism include:

🔹 Jaw pain or stiffness when waking up
🔹 Tooth sensitivity with no apparent cause
🔹 Flat or worn teeth
🔹 Headaches upon waking
🔹 Noises from clenching teeth at night (often noticed by a partner)

The cause of bruxism may be related to stress, anxiety, sleep disorders, or bite problems. For this reason, treatment should be personalised and adapted to each patient. In many cases, the use of a custom night guard is recommended, as it protects the teeth and helps relax the muscles.

At Eva Zahíno Dental Clinic, we carry out a full diagnosis to detect bruxism and assess the condition of your teeth and joints. If it is detected early, we can prevent more serious damage and improve your quality of life with effective and comfortable treatments.
