How to prevent bad breath effectively

Bad breath, or halitosis, is a more common problem than it may seem and can seriously affect our confidence and social relationships. Fortunately, in most cases, it can be solved if the cause is identified and good oral hygiene habits are adopted.

The most common cause of bad breath is the build-up of bacteria in the mouth, especially on the tongue, between the teeth, and in the gums. These bacteria release sulphur compounds that cause unpleasant odour. That is why the first step in preventing it is to maintain rigorous oral hygiene:

✅ Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes.
✅ Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily to remove debris where the toothbrush cannot reach.
✅ Clean the surface of the tongue with a tongue cleaner or the back of your toothbrush.
✅ Drink enough water to keep your mouth hydrated and avoid dryness, which can contribute to bad breath.
✅ Avoid tobacco, excessive coffee, and certain foods with strong odours.

If bad breath persists despite following these tips, it is essential to see a dentist. There may be hidden causes such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, infections, or even digestive problems.

At Eva Zahíno Dental Clinic, we carry out a personalised assessment to detect the source of the problem and help you solve it with effective and discreet treatments.
