How to choose a good toothbrush

Choosing a good toothbrush is more important than it may seem. It is not just about colours, brands, or trends: the right toothbrush can make a real difference to the health of your gums, the effectiveness of your cleaning routine, and the prevention of cavities and periodontal disease.

The first thing you should consider is the firmness of the bristles. In most cases, a soft-bristled toothbrush is recommended, as it cleans effectively without damaging the enamel or irritating the gums. Hard bristles are only indicated in very specific cases and under professional supervision.

Another key factor is the size of the brush head. It should allow comfortable access to all areas of the mouth, including the back molars. For adults, medium-sized heads are usually a good option, while children are advised to use smaller heads adapted to their age.

As for the handle, it should provide a good grip and be comfortable to use. There are excellent-quality manual toothbrushes, but electric toothbrushes are especially useful for people with reduced mobility or those looking for a deeper and more consistent clean.

Finally, remember to change your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are open or worn.
