What to do if a filling falls out

If a dental filling falls out, it can be an uncomfortable and even painful situation, but the most important thing is to stay calm and act quickly to avoid more serious complications.

Fillings can come loose for different reasons: wear over time, new decay underneath the material, trauma, or an improper bite. Whatever the cause, the ideal thing is not to let time pass and to see the dentist as soon as possible.

While you wait for your appointment, avoid chewing on that side, especially hard foods or very cold/hot foods. If you feel sensitivity or pain, you can take a common painkiller (always after consulting a professional) and maintain good hygiene by brushing the affected area gently.

Even if you do not feel pain when a filling falls out, that does not mean there is no risk. The tooth is left exposed and may suffer an infection, fracture, or become more sensitive, so delaying the visit will only make the problem worse.

At Eva Zahíno Dental Clinic, we treat these cases as a priority. We assess the condition of the tooth and suggest the best solution for you: from replacing the filling with a new material to considering other treatments if the damage has progressed.

If you have lost a filling or notice that one is loose or uncomfortable, book an appointment with our team as soon as possible. Being treated in time can prevent a bigger problem and restore comfort when eating and smiling.

Your dental health deserves immediate attention. We are here to help you.
